“공유 공간과 시간의 교차로"는 동시대 도시화 과정에서 아시아 국가들의 대도시에서 공공장소의 위치와 양태를 모색하고, 그 의미를 되짚어보는 협업 프로젝트다. 도시화, 도시 인구와 인구밀도가 지속적으로 증가하는 가운데, 공공 공간과 시간의 사유화는 점차 보편화되고 있다. 우리가 어떤 관점에서 접근하더라도 공유 공간과 시간은 줄어들고 있는 셈이다. 이 프로젝트는 공공 장소를 ‘공유하는 시간’과 ‘공존하는 공간’으로 정의하고, 어떻게 아시아에서 ‘재생'과 '젠트리피케이션'과 함께 일시적인 미시 공동체(micro-communities)의 영역이 공존하면서 공공 장소의 개념이 유기적으로 발전해 왔는지 고찰하고자 한다. 복합적으로 교차하는 여러 요소들을 살펴보며, 본 프로젝트는 '공유 공간'을 활성화시키고 함께 융합하고자 한다.
본 두 번째 협업을 통해, 프로젝트는 작게는 시간성과 이동성이 일치하는 틈새 공간에서부터 크게는 개방되어 있고 고정된 공간, 이어서 조작된 만남이 일어나는 온라인상 공간으로까지 공공 공간을 재고하고 다시금 구성해보고자 한다. 이러한 공간들은 개인과 공공의 경계가 점차 모호해지면서 발생하는 우연들, 조작, 그리고 이동성과 고정성을 반영하고 내재한다. 해방촌에서 진행한 미시적인 조사를 바탕으로 "공유 공간과 시간의 교차로"는 그 담론을 시각예술가, 건축가, 영화제작자 및 지역 공동체와 함께 진행하는 강연 및 패널 토크 '공유 공간의 파편화: 예술과 건축의 개입 및 융화', 워크숍 '마이크로 커뮤니티를 통해 미래 공유 공간 상상하기', 공공장소 활성화의 일환으로 진행되는 필름 스크리닝 '불확정한 시네마 II', 옥상 스크린 설치 '시선의 안과 주변, 너머에서'과 이동식 스크린 설치와 퍼포먼스 “10초의 눈길”과 같은 프로그램들을 통해 확장한다.

Intersections of Common Space and Time is a collaborative approach in addressing where and what public space is in contemporary urban settings in megacities of Asia. As urbanization, urban population and density continue to grow and privatization becomes a norm, shared space and time for public shrinks in all aspects. As we define public space as 'shared time’ and 'common space', this project surveys how the notion of public space organically developed in Asia into temporal pockets of micro-communities coexisting and moving adjacent to ‘‘regeneration’ and gentrification. With multiple elements intersecting concurrently, the project attempts to activate and immerse into ‘common spaces’.
This second collaboration further rethinks and reimagines public spaces from small in-between spaces of temporal and mobile coincidences to larger open stationary spaces and all the way to online spaces of manipulated encounters. These spaces reflect and cohabit with coincidences, manipulation, stationary and mobile forms constantly breaking boundaries between private and public in its urban landscape. The basis for this project are micro-surveys implemented in Haebangchon, Intersections of Common Space and Time extends its discourse with artists, architects, filmmakers and local communities in forms of lectures and panel talk, "Fragmentation of Common Space: Looking at Artistic and Architectural Interventions and Immersions"; participatory workshops, "Reimagining the Future of Common Space with Micro-Communities" and various activations of public spaces from public screening “Indecisive Cinema II”; rooftop video installation, “in, around and beyond a gaze”; mobile video installation and performance, “Ten Second Glance”

‘시선의 안과 주변, 너머에서’는 해방촌 지역의 경사지고, 들쑥날쑥하고, 좁은 골목의 지형 안에서 고정되어 있으며 개방된 공유 공간과 시간으로 하늘을 설정한다. 그리고 이러한 스카이라인을 일시적으로 점유하는 접이식 스크린 설치물을 제작한다. 도시 생활의 모든 영역에 걸쳐 상업화와 사유화가 서서히 확산되는 가운데, 스크린 설치물을 통해 자본의 흐름에 개입하고자 하며, 일인칭이나 삼인칭, 주체 혹은 객체, 이야기의 주체로서의 도시의 개인이란 무엇인지 등 도시 내 개인들의 복합적인 위치에 대해 의문을 던진다.
Framing open sky as the stationary open common space and time in a hilly, jagged and narrow alleyway filled neighborhood of Haebangchon (HBC), ‘in, around and beyond a gaze’ is a foldable video installation temporarily occupying the skyline. With bombardments of commercialization and privatization seeping into all borders of our urban life, the video installation disrupts this flow of capital, questioning urban individuals in its multiple positions as 1st person observer, 3rd person observer, subject and object, protagonist in her or his own narratives.

‘흩뿌리다'는 음식과 좌식 문화에서 나타나는 사회적 상호 작용을 응용함으로써 도시 환경속 혼란스러운 일상적 오브제들의 배열, 지역 공동체들의 문화에 대해 생각해 본다. 미시 공동체들이 우연의 유기적이고 임의적인 패턴 안에서 모였다가 흩어지는 형상을 이동식 식탁과 방석을 간단히 재구성하여 재현해 본다. 초청 작가와 함께 참가자들은 애니메이션 기법을 활용하여 과거와 미래의 기억 속 공공 공간과 사람들이 있는 도시 풍경을 재상상해본다.
Appropriating social interactions of local food and floor culture, ‘Scatter’ is a workshop reflecting on the chaotic orders of mundane objects and culture of local communities in an urban environment. With a simple recreation of movable and foldable tray tables and floor cushions, it maps out a micro-version of micro-communities gathering and scattering in organic and arbitrary patterns of coincidences. With a special guest artist, the workshop collectively reimagines a cityscape with public spaces and people in animated memories of past and future.

‘10초의 눈길'은 스페이스 원과 방은겸 작가가 협업으로 진행하는 한 시간 가량의 이동식 비디오 설치와 퍼포먼스이다. 욕실용 수세미부터 오븐에 구운 피자까지 모든 것을 판매하면서 서울 좁은 골목들에 서 있거나 골목 어귀를 점유하며 서울의 소리 풍경을 만들기도 하는 트럭 상인들로부터 영감을 받은 이 작업은 서울 특유의 도시 생활의 순환과 지리적 특성을 그려낸다. 트럭이 해방촌 일대를 세 번에 걸쳐 운행하면서 세 번의 짧은 정차를 통해 파편화된 사건들을 이어나가는 동안 트럭에 설치된 이동식 스크린에서는 일련의 비디오들이 반복 재생된다. 짧은 정차 시간 동안 방은겸 작가는 공공 공간의 소비 행위를 모방하며 주민들을 초대하여 사과밥을 후원하는 퍼포먼스를 진행하고, 스크린에서는 도시에서 촬영된 무성의 인터뷰들을 재생된다.
‘Ten Second Glance’ is a one hour mobile video installation and performance collaboration by Space One and Eunkyum Bang. Inspired by truck sellers in Korea, selling everything from a toilet brush to oven baked pizzas, driving around small alleyways stopping and occupying street corners and soundscapes of Seoul, this collaboration portrays the unique geography and circulation of urban life in Seoul. Connecting the fragmented pockets of happenings around Haebangchon with three cycles and three short stops, the installation simultaneously shows a series of videos looping. During the short stops, a performative interaction by Bang invites the community to imitate the act of consumption in public space with her apple rice and the videos of silent interviews of the city.
