My grandmother’s table
How does an idea of a ‘yoli (요리)’ or ‘dish’ migrate from one generation to the next, one timezone to another, one city to another, one memory to another?
I romanticize that dish I had when I was ten, at my grandmother’s house. I walk into her house, a fish tank with two goldfish swimming around, I open the bottle of fish flakes. It smells very fishy, I want to put it in my mouth and taste it but instead I pick up a finger-full and rub my two fingers, a ritual I fantasize as sprinkling magic onto the fish who are more excited about it than I am. I walk over to the table and I’m sure the table’s full of ‘banchan’ (side dishes) yet I only see the colors and shapes of the ‘eggroll’ and a bowl of ‘somyun’ (fish noodle soup), that steaming bowl of noodle soup and the bright yellow egg roll dish. I romanticize the smell, the taste, the dimensions of them all.
Migrate.
I’m not sure what ‘romance’ means but I think it’s a fantasy.
So I migrate.
The eggroll migrates quite well with me. In every time zone and city I’ve lived and visited, I was able to recreate this eggroll.
Flatten and rotate.
My mom’s instruction is,
‘The most ideal is to crack four eggs into a bowl, mix it really well with whatever tool available, mix really fast and it gets frothy. When the color is completely and wholly yellow without any spots, gradations, and transparency, make each layer as thin as possible and make at least six layers all together.’
Superegg!
Six layers of fantasies rolled onto one another.

Each egg has a number. So I count and I wonder, who stamped the eggs?
Each egg has its own plastic cover. So I poke and I wonder, can I sit in it?
Each egg has a lid. So I put it on and think.
And I plasticize.
